Shoe Lining Leather: Cow, Goat or Sheep? Types, Thickness and Selection
The lining is invisible from outside, but it decides comfort, breathability and how long a shoe lasts. Here are the main lining leathers and how to choose one.
Why leather lining
A leather lining lets air through, absorbs moisture, does not chafe and helps the shoe keep its shape. Linings are usually chrome-tanned because it is soft and colourfast [1].
Types of lining leather
- Cow (calf) lining: strong and hard-wearing, for men's shoes and boots. Post Deri stocks black cow lining and an assorted lining-upper leather.
- Goat lining: thin, soft and supple, good for women's and light shoes.
- Sheep lining: very soft against the skin, for comfort and children's shoes.
- Pigskin: porous and breathable [2], so it is widely used. Many buyers in the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia do not accept it; for those markets choose goat, sheep or cow.
- Vegetable-tanned and chrome-free linings: for makers who care about composition.
What thickness you need
Linings are usually thinner than uppers, typically 0.5–1.0 mm [2]; on a classic dress shoe the lining can be about 0.5 mm [3]. Boots and winter shoes take a heavier lining. Post Deri's lining leathers are 0.8–1.6 mm.
Safety requirements
In the Eurasian Economic Union, leather for shoe uppers, bottoms and linings falls under technical regulation TR CU 017/2011 on light-industry products, which sets a stricter free-formaldehyde limit for lining leather than for other leather [4]. Check with your customs broker which documents your shipment needs.
How to choose
- Market: for Muslim-majority countries use goat, sheep or cow instead of pigskin.
- Shoe: light women's shoes – goat or sheep; boots – cow.
- Colour: black and beige are the classics; light linings must not stain socks.
- Test: rub a sample with a damp white cloth – a good lining leaves no colour.
